“Let’s Break the Silence!” abortion stories

Abortions take place every day. Every year millions of people worldwide have abortions and will never talk about this experience. Because: to consciously decide to have an abortion is still frowned upon, ostracized and evaluated in many places. People are excluded, shamed, condemned and punished for it.

Silence is maintained.

We say: enough! Let us break the silence together and talk about our experiences. Let us share our experiences with others as naturally as the decision to have an abortion should be. Let us abolish shame, guilt, stigma and condemnation.

Our decisions are clear!
They are our bodies and our lives! And our reasons and stories are as diverse as we are.

Tell us about the procedure as it was for you. And how you felt about it. What sucked? What was desperate? Who and/or what stood in your way? Judging your decision? Insecure? …strengthened? What gave you strength? Who and/or what was important? Who was there? How do you feel about it today? What do we have to stand up for? What must change? What has to be considered?

Design a postcard or take a photo of yourselves with your statement. Send us video clips, audio clips. Send us letters. Send us your text.

Let us break with silence and stigma!

Discussion panel – About “unborn” life

To terminate a pregnancy does not seem to be a woman’s personal affair anymore. According to conservative hardliners*, her belly belongs to everyone! The event takes up the current debate and looks for solutions to the complex problem of self-determination and freedom of information.

What is the situation like with abortions in Saxony and with our neighbours? What vision and demands do we have? What is the image of women and families behind this? How does this fit together with the dwindling number of midwives or insufficiently financed day care centres?

This year on 27th of April there will be a public counter protest against the “Pro-Life- March” in Prague, organized by our friends from Kollektiv 115.
Together with Pro Choice Sachsen and  URA, we call for bringing the protest and our demands for an emancipatory perspective instead of reactionary, sexist family ideology to an international level. We call for supporting our local friends* and comrades-in-arms in their feminist and anti-nationalist struggles.

Therefore we share the call of Kollektiv 115:

Emancipation is fine as hell – Stop the silent march

Every year in Germany, Christian fundamentalist opposers of pregnancy terminations gather at demonstrations to go public with their worldview. These demonstrations take, for example, place in Berlin and Münster. Since 2010, there’s also a mobilisation for so-called silent marches in Annaberg-Buchholz. Those are directed against everyone’s right of self-determination – but predominantly against the self-determination of those who can get pregnant.

Until last year, the CDL (Christian-democrates for life) organised the marches. They are part of the CDU and their stated aim is to fully criminalise pregnancy terminations not only in Germany, buy around the world.
This March, the organiser of the silent march changed and now it is a group called “right to live Saxony” (Lebensrecht Sachsen) – a change that makes the event more open to those people who support the same reactionary ideas, but who don’t understand themselves as religious or are affiliated with other parties. In consequence, the march is now especially suitable for supporters of the AFD.

Racist prejudices and the fear of a decline in values are on a rise. Christian fundamentalists tie in with widespread sexist and homophobic oppinions and make the atmosphere even worse. With their events, they fuel prejudices and hate – which makes protests even more important.

We won’t let anyone tell us whether we should (not) have kids or how many kids we have to have.
We won’t let anyone tell us how our relationships should look like, how we live, love and die.
Those are our lives, our bodies, our decisions!
For emancipation and self-determination!
Raise your voice – your body, your choice!
Be loud and creative!
Turning the silent march into a disaster!

Greetings from Malmö

We had a lot of fun at the CES conference in Malmö (Sweden), shared our thoughts with a lot of comrades from all over europe (and beyond) and made new friends.

We also contributed to two events at the conference. One was the panel with Feminist Fightback about Reproductive Justice, the other one was a workshop about connecting feminist and anticapitalist struggles. Continue reading
